Eggs in Gelatin, a Dog and Disaster
                       by Jennifer Hoffman
Have you ever been in a situation that you thought was really funny, and maybe it was, but the person it was happening to didn't think it was funny and in fact, found it to be very painful? While you see the situation from your perspective and just see the humor, for them it's personal and means something entirely different. I remember when I was about twelve my mother had spent several days preparing food for a dinner my parents were hosting for some important guests. She spent hours on one of the appetizers, eggs in gelatin, and was so proud of it. A few hours before the dinner we set the table and got the appetizers ready to serve. Then my mother went to get dressed.

Now we had a sneaky dog who loved people food and you can imagine what happened next. He got into the kitchen and only ate one thing, the dish my mother had worked so hard on. When she walked into the kitchen to make a final check of the appetizers we heard her scream, the dog ran out of the kitchen and we all ran in. There was her beautiful masterpiece with big bites in it. My mother was furious and ready to get rid of the dog but that would not bring the dish back, she would have to replace it with something else. We didn't dare laugh because she was so angry but it was very funny. And we were secretly glad the dog at that particular dish because it was eggs in gelatin, which we didn't like.

But it wasn't about the dog eating the food, this meant other things to my mother and she saw it as a failure. When we talk about it today she always says something about 'that darned dog' and still doesn't think it's funny because it to her it was about how life doesn't work out, being let down and disappointed and how her success was affected by things that were out of her control. And whenever she did her best, something happened to ruin it. In this case it was our dog but this was not the first time that this kind of situation had happened to her.

Whenever I'm in a situation where I don't know whether to laugh or be sympathetic, I try to see what it means to the other person because it's often highly personal and there are meanings that I am not aware of. They can't see the humor in a situation which reminds them that success is always one step beyond them and no matter how they try, they don't succeed. For them, these 'funny' incidents are reasons to be sad and disappointed and when we laugh they are angry and think we are being inconsiderate. What can we do to help them feel powerful? Trying to show them a different perspective might help but if not, we can acknowledge their disappointment without feeling the obligation to fix it, let them express their anger and disappointment and then help them see a more powerful alternative for the next time. And we can laugh about it in private.

    TAKE A STAND
    by Cheryl Richardson

"Just imagine how much you'd get done if you stopped actively sabotaging your own work.

We must be talented, powerful and resilient creatures indeed given how much we manage to produce despite the constant undercutting, ridicule and needless censorship we aim at ourselves."

Imagine how resourceful, creative, loving and powerful you must be to live the life you're living right now while under the constant scrutiny and judgement of a harsh inner critic.

    Then...

Imagine how much more you could be and do if you learned to become your own best cheerleader?

    The possibilities are endless....
    Take Action Challenge

To become your own best cheerleader, start with three simple steps:
    1. Every morning when you wake up, welcome yourself to the day by saying: "I am so excited to be sharing this day with you!"

    2. Repeat the affirmation above a minimum of twenty times during the course of the day.

    3. Catch yourself being mean to yourself and use that moment as a trigger to say: "Whoa, you are an amazing human being and I will stand by you no matter what!"  Repeat this step as necessary.

    MUDDY WATERS
Often there's no point in continually asking for explanations from people you feel have wounded you.  They may be as confused as you are about the chemistry of their motives.  In any case, forgiveness does not require a preamble of understanding:  it's a gesture of the heart, not of the mind.

    BE LIGHTER
Emotional attachments, which often involve both yearning and nostalgia, deaden our appreciation of the now.  To yearn is to inhabit an imagined dream space; to be nostalgic is to inhabit a rose-tinted memory of past times.  Neither of these is a desirable residence for the waking soul.  Move to a new neighborhood:  the evolving present.

    LOST BEARINGS
We speak of "losing ourselves: in profound and absorbing experiences, and the metaphor is an apt one.  Take this idea literally and visit somewhere completely new to you - a stretch of countryside, a safe area of a city.  Use a map to plan a walk, and set off with refreshments.  At a certain point, tuck the map away and walk from memory.  When you become disorientated, relish this liberating sensation.  Appreciate what you discover.  In unfamiliar territory we can learn how to see again.

    WISHES AND GOALS

A key principle of awareness is that we can't rely on the process of cause and effect, nor on other people to act according to our wishes - so we must relinquish those wishes.  To work at controlling the uncontrollable, or to wish for the impossible, wastes energy better spent on achievable goals.

    Inward/Outward
Awareness that focuses entirely inward, into the mind, the spirit, and the self, while failing to give due attention t the wonders of nature and the universe, is merely a partial experience.  To travel onward we need to go joyfully out into the world as well as deep into the recesses of our being.

    Still Guilty

Guilt tends to nibble away at our peace of mind - preventing us from living fully in the present.  Follow this four-point plant for dealing with minor guilt.  First, acknowledge your fault, without making excuses to yourself.  Then make amends to any injured part - with not just an apology but also, if possible some form of restitution.  Then make a commitment not to repeat the offense.  And finally, tell yourself that you've taken the appropriate steps and that the issue is history.

    Sounding Off

To unload anxiety, frustration, or emotional pain, focus your mind on the pit of your stomach.  Slowly gather these negative emotions, and move them up through your stomach, chest, and throat.  Then release your feelings in a deep groan - as if you're releasing a heavy stone of emotion into a deep well in front of you.  Notice how much lighter you feel.

    Beyond Reason

Intuition, the ability to "know" something without resorting to reason, is a mysterious gift that science struggles to explain.  Some say that intuition is our soul's way of receiving messages that help us on our path.  What's for sure is that our intuition works bests when we're calm and relaxed:  center yourself with meditation techniques before using yours.

    BOWEN TECHNIQUE - KATHY LAW

Bowtech, the original Bowen Technique, is gentle form of body work in which very
subtle moves performed over the muscles and connective tissue send messages
deep into the body, retrieving memory of a preferred, relaxed, balanced way of
wellbeing.  Results can be remarkable, even from the first session; often only a
few sessions are needed to correct the presenting problem.  There are frequent
but very essential pauses throughout the session that allow the body time to
respond and begin the healing process.

The Bowen Technique does not use forceful manipulation.  The technique addresses
not on the musculo-skeletal framework, but also the facia, nerves and internal
organs.  The body's integrated response improves circulation and lymphatic
drainage and aids in the assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins.

The original Bowen Technique is extremely gentle and is considered appropriate
for anyone from pregnant women to newborn babies, the frail and elderly.
It can assist recovery from many conditions, from traumatic injury to chronic
illness, depending upon each individual's capacity to heal.  No adverse side
    effects have been reported.

The technique should be considered for:  back pain, sciatica, digestive and bowel
problems including IBS, ear ache, ear infections, migraines, fibromyalgia, chronic
fatigue syndrome, knee, ankle, foot problems, menstrual and hormonal irregularities,
sports and accident injuries, neck/shoulder problems (incl. frozen shoulder),
groin pain, pelvic tilt, uneven leg length, respiratory problems and hay fever,
RSI, carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow, etc. etc.
